Etching in this book were inspired by the extraordinarily detailed decoration of Oud Zuid, an ancient district in Amsterdam. I found the arts that lasted for centuries were buried by ordinary life and surrounded by dust from the new century. The passing by was always focused on something freshly born, neglected to see these enameled tiles and decorative columns. I sensed loneliness from them, also from the stories that vanished in time. So I called this series “King of Loneliness”, both the prints and this book.
